RIDE THE STERNWHEELER ROSE at Lock Fest 2007
Because our most common request from visitors is "Can I ride a boat through the Locks?', visitors to Lock Fest this year will have the chance to ride Portland's Sternwheeler Rose through the locks. The Sternwheeler will be the priority boat on Saturday, the 22nd, and will go into the locks first for the first upstream transit of the day, at 8:00 a.m. (boarding at 7:30, tickets available at the main Gate of Lock Fest from 7 am.). The first downstream lockages will begin when the Rose and any yachts or other craft that followed her up in the second group emerge on the upper river. Small craft wanting the first downstream transit should approach the upper entrance guard lock by 9:30-10.
The Sternwheeler starts up again at approx. 1 pm., from the festival, so that will be another time for boats wanting to go upriver.
Rides are one-way and only $5 per person over six years of age.
200 tickets will be sold at the Main Entrance to Lock Fest and 200 at Willamette Park's Bernert Landing dock, first-come, first-served.
RIDERS MUST BE ABLE TO CLIMB/GO DOWN MANY STEEP STAIRS AND A VERY STEEP RAMP TO AND FROM THE BOAT DOCKS.
The water is very low this time of year and will make access difficult for people with mobility impairment. Please consider your ability to safely participate in this activity before buying a ticket.
The Oregon City Trolley will be running about every 15 minutes between the Landing and the festival and its parking lots. There will be costumed historic interpretors on both the sternwheeler and the Trolley, offering information and storytelling about the Locks and their importance to early Oregon, Clackamas County, and the founding of the Willamette Neighborhood of West Linn.
Each trip will last approximately 2-2.5 hours, depending upon traffic in the Locks that day. Flexibility and patience will help everyone have a great day.
BOARDING TIMES AT LOCK FEST: 7:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (estimated)
BOARDING TIMES AT BERNERT'S BOAT LANDING AT WILLAMETTE PARK IN WEST LINN: 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (estimated)
The final ride should disembark at the lower Locks dock by 5:30 p.m. Lock Fest exhibits, music, and food end at 4:00 p.m. but the shuttle between the festival and Bernerts' Landing/ Willamette Historic District will run until close to 6 p.m.
All money collected for riding the Rose will go towards the commissioning of the nomination of the Locks to be a National Landmark.
